清唱圣剧《弥赛亚》（Messiah）自1742年在爱尔兰的都柏林首演至今，二百八十年来，几乎每年的圣诞节和复活节，都会在世界各地的音乐厅、教堂上演，向世人唱响耶稣基督降生、受难、复活的救世福音。2020 年以来全球健康危机不仅没有使世界各地演出《弥赛亚》的圣诞传统中断，反而通过线上平台使更多观众得到观看的机会。在YouTube不但可以看到各地的演出，还有点击超过五千万次的商城快闪版《哈利路亚》大合唱（https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXh7JR9oKVE ）。《弥赛亚》的影响力可谓跨越时空，历久弥新。
剧中多首独唱、合唱单曲，被世界各地的合唱团和诗班广为演唱。其中最为著名的就是《哈利路亚》大合唱 （Hallelujah chorus） 。1743年复活节期间, 《弥赛亚》在伦敦首演。当《哈利路亚》大合唱排山倒海般地响起时，英王乔治二世深受感动，霍然起立，站着听完全曲，并称其为“天国的国歌。” 从此，站着聆听《哈利路亚》大合唱便成为一条不成文的惯例，一直延续至今。
“哈利路亚”是希伯来文，意为“赞美耶和华”，在圣经的《诗篇》和《启示录》中多次出现。圣诞节期间，当世界各地的人们起立高歌“哈利路亚”的时候，我们仿佛看到《启示录》中“万民都要来到你面前敬拜”的预言如何在地上展现。
走出人生低谷的创作
《弥赛亚》的主题是耶稣基督。圣经旧约中希伯来文的“弥赛亚”和新约中希腊文的“基督”表达的是同一个含义：“救世主”，指的就是圣子耶稣。《弥赛亚》的剧本和以往的圣乐和清唱剧有所不同。首先，剧本的台词全部摘自《圣经》，都是神的话语，是英国剧作家查尔斯.詹宁斯（Charles Jennens ，1700 –1773) 根据经文汇编而成，没有添加任何个人的发挥。其次，《弥赛亚》是世界上最先采用英语的清唱剧。这为《弥赛亚》后来在世界很多地方的流行预备了有利条件。
剧作家詹宁斯是一位虔诚的基督徒。在当时欧洲逐渐高涨的人文主义、自然神论的思潮中，他以捍卫真理的使命感，仔细地从旧约和新约中找出所有有关弥赛亚的经文，希望弥赛亚的真光能照亮人心。他选用了旧约的先知书和《诗篇》，以及新约的福音书、书信和《启示录》中的经文。从旧约对弥赛亚降世救赎的预言，到新约里主耶稣的出生、生活、受难、受死及复活，直至《启示录》中主耶稣荣耀的再临，把弥赛亚的救恩大光如旭日初升般逐渐呈现出来。
《弥赛亚》的曲作者是英籍的德国音乐家亨德尔 (George Frideric Handel，1685–1759)。 他从小就富于音乐天赋，游学意大利，移居英国。他和同年出生的巴赫奠定了音乐历史上辉煌的巴洛克时代。他曾深受皇室器重，作品也广受欢迎。但是在五十几岁时，他经营了三十多年的歌剧事业开始没落。他不仅负债累累，身体也发生了中风偏瘫。人们以为他的音乐生涯就此完结了。
就在亨德尔跌入人生最低谷之时，他收到了挚友詹宁斯寄来的《弥赛亚》剧本。亨德尔欣喜不已，决心潜心创作。1741年8月22日下午，他开始为《弥赛亚》谱曲。他在6天之内便完成了第一部分，9天后完成第二部分，又用6天完成整曲的架构，最后用3天写了管弦乐部分。这部需要花两个多钟头演出的音乐巨作，乐谱手稿长达千页，亨德尔仅用24天的时间就完成了创作。不仅速度惊人，而且手稿整洁，几乎没有修改的痕迹。
在创作过程中，亨德尔常常处在近乎癫狂的状态。他废寝忘食，伏案疾书，思如泉涌，一气呵成。在亨德尔写完《哈利路亚》合唱曲后，他的仆人看到他泪流满面，并听到他激动地说：“我想我是看见了整个的天堂，还有至尊的上帝！”
在回顾这24天的创作经历时，他说： “我在创作时，分不清自己是在身体之内还是出离于身体之外。”可以说，亨德尔在创作《弥赛亚》的音乐时，真实地经历了弥赛亚的同在！
名至实归的救世佳音
亨德尔熟谙德法英意的音乐传统。此前三十六年创作、编导意大利歌剧的经验，使他在声乐和器乐创作上达到炉火纯青的境界，也使得《弥赛亚》融汇了多国的音乐精华，更具国际性。
他注重通过旋律、和声及反差表达心灵体验；在叙述中，充满了高低起伏，波澜壮阔；在咏叹中，既有神性的崇高，又有人性的生动。他使宣叙调的音调更旋律化，使咏叹调的性格更多样化，并加强了序曲、间奏曲、器乐伴奏的标题特征。在合唱的创作上，他不拘泥于复调音乐，而是广泛地运用主调音乐，使两者有机地揉和在一起。
莫扎特出于对亨德尔的崇敬，于1789年为《弥赛亚》重新配器时说：“亨德尔比我们任何人都清楚如何让音乐产生影响力，他选择的音符如同霹雳一样击中人心。” 海顿在1790年首次访问伦敦时被《弥赛亚》深深打动，当他听到《哈利路亚》大合唱时，不禁泪流满面。《弥赛亚》也让贝多芬认定亨德尔是唯一超越他的作曲家，称他为 “我们当中的大师。”
《弥赛亚》不仅是一部伟大的音乐作品，它也名至实归地救助了很多无力自救的贫民。此剧在都柏林的第一次演出就是救济穷人的义演。那次演出的收入帮助了152位因为还不起债务而入狱的穷人赎身出狱。此剧在伦敦的首演，也是赞助孤儿和救济老人的义演。《以赛亚书》61章提到，弥赛亚来到人间要传好消息给谦卑的人，医好伤心的人，报告被掳的得释放、被囚的出监牢，安慰一切悲哀的人。《弥赛亚》这部音乐作品实实在在地把救赎的好消息和实在的安慰带给很多人，真实地彰显了弥赛亚的恩典。
亨德尔并未将作品的完成归功于自己。在《弥赛亚》曲谱的最后，他写下”SDG” （Soli Deo Gloria），意思是“荣耀归与上帝”。1759的复活节期间, 亨德尔最后一次听了《弥赛亚》的演出。一周后，他完成了在世上的使命。在亨德尔的墓地，他的雕像手持一张乐谱，上面刻着《弥赛亚》的第45首咏叹调：“我知道我的救赎主活着，末了必站立在地上。 我这皮肉灭绝之后，我必在肉体之外得见神。”（《约伯记》 19:25-26）
